01 — The city
Municipal permitting
Every city in our footprint has a building department that issues permits and conducts inspections. Whether a motorized screen installation on an existing covered structure requires one depends on the scope of work — whether it constitutes an alteration to the structure, and whether electrical work is involved.
Cities differ enormously in how clearly they publish this. Lubbock is the clearest; Sweetwater publishes no list at all. In every case, asking the department about your specific scope is the only reliable route.
- Ask about your specific scope, not about screens in general.
- Electrical work often changes the answer.
- Published guidance varies enormously between our markets.
