01 — Dust
Blowing dust — a screen problem
Across the Permian Basin and the South Plains, dust and strong wind tend to arrive together. The NWS Midland/Odessa office documents that blowing dust and significant west wind events occur concomitantly across the region.
A closed opening keeps the worst of the grit off cushions, counters and cooking surfaces. That is a real and useful benefit. It is not a seal, and in a severe regional dust event it is not a guarantee of anything — a documented February 2023 event reduced visibility to zero in Lubbock for a sustained period, and no patio screen is a meaningful factor in conditions like that.
- Everyday dust: a screen genuinely helps.
- Severe regional dust events: it is not a protective measure.
- Clear vinyl shows dust more than mesh does.
