Smart Home & Motorized Screen Controls

A screen that is awkward to operate stops being used by about the third week. How you run it deserves as much thought as which fabric goes on it — and most of that thinking has to happen before anything is fixed to the wall.

The problem

The fourth layer, and the one left until last

Of the four layers — system, fabric, application and control — control is the one most often treated as a detail to sort out at the end. It is also the one that decides whether the system gets used daily or gets used twice.

The failure is predictable. A remote lives in a drawer. A wall control ends up somewhere nobody walks past. Four openings need four separate actions when they should need one. None of those are product faults; they are planning faults, and they are cheap to avoid and expensive to correct.

Control also has a hard dependency that catches people out: most control problems turn out to be power problems. Where power can reach constrains what control scheme is possible, and that is a decision made with the housing, not after it.

The options

How these systems get operated

Four approaches, and most projects use more than one.

01 — Remote

Handheld remote

The simplest option and the one most systems ship with. It works, it needs no wiring beyond the motor itself, and it is entirely adequate for a single opening. Its weakness is that a remote is an object that can be mislaid, and on a multi-opening patio juggling one remote across several channels gets tiresome quickly.

  • Best for one or two openings.
  • No additional wiring beyond the motor.
  • Consider a wall control as well, not instead.

02 — Wall control

Wall control

A fixed control in a sensible place is what turns a screen into part of the house rather than a gadget. The position matters more than the model: on the route you already walk when you close up, at a height that works, and visible enough that a guest can find it. This is worth deciding at the design stage because it usually means a cable.

  • Site it on the closing-up route, not on the nearest wall.
  • Plan the cable run before finishes go on.
  • One control can serve a group of openings.

03 — Grouping

Grouping openings

On a patio with three or four openings, the single most valuable control decision is grouping — one action that closes a whole side, or the whole space. It removes the friction that otherwise stops people using the system on a busy evening, and it costs nothing extra if it is planned rather than retrofitted.

  • Group by side, or by how the space is actually used.
  • Decided during specification, not after installation.
  • Retrofitting a grouping scheme is disproportionately awkward.

04 — Automation

Home automation integration

Motorized screens can be brought into a compatible home automation platform where the motor and the platform support each other. Progressive Screens publishes which motor brands and integration platforms its systems currently work with, and that list changes over time — so the honest answer for any specific home is that it has to be confirmed against your equipment rather than assumed.

What we will not do is tell you your existing system will work before anyone has checked. Compatibility depends on the motor selected, the platform version and the integration method.

  • Published platform support changes; it is confirmed per project.
  • Existing home systems are verified rather than assumed compatible.

The dependency

Most control problems are power problems

Before any of the above is a real option, power has to reach the opening. Not the wall nearby, not the nearest outlet — the housing itself.

On new construction that is close to free: a cable run decided at framing costs almost nothing and disappears into the structure. On an existing patio it may mean a surface run, a route through a soffit, or in some cases a genuine constraint on where a screen can go at all. It is one of the things we look at during the measure, and it is a common reason a specification changes between the first conversation and the quote.

This is also why automation can usually be added later but power usually cannot. If there is any prospect of wanting integration in future, the time to run the cable is now.

What we confirm rather than claim. Motor options, supported platforms and integration methods are the manufacturer's and they change. We confirm what is currently available for your specific configuration, in writing, before anything is quoted — rather than publishing a compatibility list here that may be out of date by the time you read it.

Questions about controls

Can I add automation later?

Often yes, provided the motor selected supports it and power is already in the right place. That second condition is the one that catches people — automation can usually be added afterwards, but running power to an opening after finishes are on is a different job. If integration is even a possibility, plan the cable now.

Will this work with my existing smart home system?

It may, and we will confirm rather than assume. Compatibility depends on which motor is selected, which platform you run and which integration method is available. We check the manufacturer's current published support against your specific equipment before quoting. We will not tell you it is compatible on the basis of a brand name.

Can one control close every screen at once?

Yes, with grouping — and on a patio with several openings it is the single most valuable control decision you can make. It is far easier to plan at specification than to retrofit afterwards.

What happens when the power is out?

A motorized screen needs power to move. Behaviour during an outage depends on the motor and configuration selected, so it is something to raise at specification if it matters to you rather than something we can answer generically here.

Do I need a wall control if I have a remote?

Not strictly, but on anything beyond one opening we would generally suggest both. A remote is convenient and losable; a fixed control in the right place is what makes the system part of the daily routine.

Does the control scheme change the cost?
